Mamata Banerjee has written the second letter to Prime Minister Modi in 8 days regarding the Kolkata rape-murder case. In this, Mamta said- I had written a letter on August 22 demanding a law to give severe punishment to the rapist, but there was no response from you on such a sensitive issue. However, a response was received from the Government of India, but the seriousness of the issue was not taken into account in it. I again request that the central government should make a strict law on heinous crimes like rape-murder. This law should also have a provision for ending the case within a stipulated time. In fact, Mamta had said in a letter written to the PM on August 22 that 90 rapes are happening every day in the country. Fast track courts should be made. In response to this, on August 26, Women Development Minister Annapurna Devi wrote a letter to Mamta, in which she alleged that most of the 123 fast track courts in Bengal are closed. Mamta also responded to this in the second letter. Mamata said in the second letter – 88 fast track courts are operational in the state. In the previous letter to the PM, Mamata had written – 90 rapes are happening every day. CM Mamata Banerjee had written to Modi – The current data shows that 90 rape cases are happening every day in the country. In most cases, the rape victim is killed. This trend is frightening. It shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the country. It is our duty that women feel safe. For this, it is necessary that the central government makes a strict law, which has a provision for severe punishment to the person committing such heinous crime. Such cases should be run in fast track courts. To ensure that the victim gets justice quickly, it is necessary that the trial should be completed in 15 days. Center’s reply to Mamata’s first letter – Only 11 fast track courts are operational in Bengal. Mamata’s first letter was answered by Women Development and Family Welfare Minister Annapurna Devi on behalf of the Central Government. She had said – A total of 123 fast track courts were started in Bengal, but most of them are closed. Apart from this, Annapurna Devi had said that the Mamata government is not taking any action regarding the pending POCSO case in Bengal.
