Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kevadia in Gujarat on the occasion of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 149th birth anniversary and Unity Day. He said – Once we used to sing songs of unity in school and college that all the residents of India are one, no matter how many colors, looks, clothes and languages they have. PM said that today if someone says that if we are one then we are safe, then some people start calling it wrong. These people are upset with the unity of the country. Earlier, PM paid floral tribute to the Statue of Unity and administered the oath of Unity Day. In 2010, Modi, as the Chief Minister, had announced to install it. Construction of the statue started on 31 October 2013, which was completed five years later i.e. on 31 October 2018, on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The statue was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. 109 tons of iron was used
The biggest feature of this statue is that for this, 135 metric tons of old farming tools were donated from more than five lakh farmers across the country, which were melted to make 109 tons of iron. This iron has been used in this statue. The statue is made of 6 thousand tons of structural steel
The cost of this statue was Rs 2989 crore. 2.10 lakh cubic meters of cement-concrete and 2000 tons of bronze, 6 thousand 500 tons of structural steel and 18 thousand 500 tons of iron rods have been used in it. It is built in the middle of a pond built in an area of 12 km. The statue can also withstand earthquake tremors of 6.5 magnitude and storms of 220 km speed. Due to the use of 85% copper in the construction of the statue, it cannot rust for thousands of years. Standing in the gallery of the statue, 40 people at a time can see the Sardar Sarovar Dam and Vindhya Mountains.
