Top military judge Mohammad Kanju al-Hassan, who sentenced thousands of people to death in the infamous Sednaya prison during Bashar al-Assad’s presidency in Syria, has been arrested. Kanju Hassan’s arrest is the highest level arrest after the recent uprising in Syria. Kanju al-Hassan was the judge of Syria’s military court from 2011 to 2014. During this time he sentenced thousands of people to death. Kanju Hassan is accused of extorting Rs 1500 crore from the relatives of prisoners in different ways. According to Britain’s Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Kanju Hassan was arrested on Thursday along with 20 others. Syria’s interim Home Minister Mohammad Abdel Rahman said that 14 government soldiers were killed while arresting Kanju al-Hassan who was hiding in Tatoos province. The British government banned Kanju al-Hassan in 2023 due to the repression of civilians in Syria. Kanju was responsible for inhumane crimes in Sednaya prison. Judge Kanju Hasan has serious allegations of human rights violations. After studying law, he served in the military court of the Syrian army.
