Train trial took place on Rameswaram’s Pamban Bridge: Country’s first vertical lift-up bridge, 2 km long; Coast Guard boat passed underneath

Rameswaram Express train was successfully trialled on Friday on the new Pamban Railway Bridge built in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The train was taken from Mandapam to Rameswaram Railway Station. There were no passengers in it. Locals are happy with the resumption of train service after 2 years. Apart from this, the vertical lift up bridge was lifted for the first time for the patrolling boat of the Indian Coast Guard. After this the boat passed under the bridge. Pamban Bridge is a wonderful example of engineering. This bridge is 2 km long, which is built on the Bay of Bengal. It has been built parallel to the existing Pamban Bridge. It has 100 spans across the sea, out of which 99 spans measure 18-3 meters and one span measures 72-5 meters. Pamban Bridge is the country’s first vertical lift up bridge, which has been completed at a cost of Rs 531 crore. Southern Railway had conducted a light engine trial run on the new Pamban Bridge on July 12, 2024, which confirmed the structural integrity and reliability of the bridge.
With the tower car trial run conducted on August 4, 2024, an OHE (overhead equipment) tower car was operated across the bridge up to Rameswaram station. Old Pamban Bridge was commissioned in 1914
Considered as one of the structures built in the earlier era, the Pamban Cantilever Bridge was commissioned in the year 1914. Connecting peninsular India and the Gulf of Mannar, it connects Mandapam to Rameswaram Island. The bridge falls under the jurisdiction of Madurai Division of Southern Railway. It is 2.06 km long and has 145 spans of 12-2 m (40 ft) and a shearer span of 65-23 m (213 ft) clear span. The bridge was originally built for metre gauge and was later strengthened to broad gauge standard during 2006-07. The navigational span is also known as the Scherzer Rolling Lift Span, named after the railway engineer who invented it. Thousands of passengers visit every year

The old bridge has served for over 110 years which is much more than the codal life. Only 1-5 metres of space is available between the high tide level and the bottom of the girder, which leads to seawater splashing on the girders.
