Punjab Kings, Lucknow Supergiants and Gujarat Titans announced replacement players before the start of the second phase of IPL. New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson, William O’Roark and Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis will be seen playing the remaining matches of the tournament. England’s Jonny Bairstow can play against Mumbai Indians in the playoffs. The second phase of IPL will start from May 17. The tournament was halted for 8 days due to the tense situation between India and Pakistan. The last match was played between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals on 8 May. Punjab Kings replaced New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson with pacer Kyle Jamieson of his own country. Ferguson was ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Jamieson became a part of Punjab for Rs 2 crore. Kusal Mendis will play the playoffs
Gujarat Titans included wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis in the squad in place of Jos Buttler. Butler will return to his country on 26 May to play for England. GT’s last league stage match will be against Chennai on 25 May. If Titans reach the playoffs, Kusal Mendis will be seen playing in place of Butler in the team. Lucknow Supergiants’ fast bowler Mayank Yadav is once again out of the tournament. The team included New Zealand’s William O’Rourke in his place. Mayank is suffering from a back injury. O’Rourke was bought at a price of 3 crores. Bairstow can replace Will Jacks
Mumbai Indians all-rounder Will Jacks will also return to England on 26 May. If MI make it to the playoffs, the team can include Jonny Bairstow in place of Jacks. Bairstow, who played 50 IPL matches, remained unsold in the mega auction. Players will not be able to be retained
IPL said in a new advisory that franchises can take player replacement for the second phase. However, whichever players become part of the squad, the teams will not be able to retain them before the next season. That means O’Rourke, Mendis, Jamieson and Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman will be in the mini auction before the next season. Delhi made Mustafizur a part of the team in place of Jack Fraser Magark. The league stage will run till 27 May. The second phase of IPL will run from 17 to 27 May. 13 matches of the league stage will be played in 11 days, including 2 double headers. Qualifier-1 and Eliminator will be held on 29 and 30 May. Qualifier-2 will be played on 1 June and the final on 3 June.
