The Bangladesh Army has termed the speculations of the coup of interim government chief Mohammad Yunus in the country as a rumour. According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Star, senior officers of the Army Headquarters said in a press conference in Dhaka Cantt on Monday that no such discussion has taken place and we have no such intention. On the other hand, the army called the Rakhine corridor a sensitive issue and said that there would be no compromise. In response to a question from journalists, the army said, the corridor is a sensitive issue. The Bangladesh Army will never be involved in any such action that compromises national security. The conflict between the government and the army came out in the open last week in Bangladesh. Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zama, while addressing his officers at the Army Headquarters on May 22, clearly said that the general elections should not be postponed beyond December this year. The Army Chief warned that the interim government led by Yunus has no moral or constitutional right to take decisions on sensitive national issues. On the issue of Rakhine Corridor, the army has been saying since March that it is illegal to build it without our consent. Nor will anyone be allowed to do so. After this, the Yunus government took a U-turn and said that it has not signed an agreement with any country regarding the Rakhine corridor on the Myanmar border. At the same time, Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman has clearly given an ultimatum to hold elections by December. On the other hand, discussions are going on between the opposition parties BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami regarding elections and strategies are being made for fighting on the streets. Apart from Yunus, the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami is also in favor of postponing the elections.
