Former cricketer and MLC Mohammad Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in the Telangana government on Friday. He was administered the oath by Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma at the Raj Bhavan. He will be the state’s 16th minister. Meanwhile, the BJP has opposed Azharuddin’s appointment. The BJP claims that the by-election for the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat violates the model code of conduct and that the Congress is engaging in appeasement politics. The BJP filed a complaint with the State Election Commission on Thursday. A by-election is scheduled for the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat in Telangana on November 11th. Muslim voters constitute 30% of the electorate. It is believed that Azharuddin’s entry into the cabinet will benefit the Congress party. Azharuddin lost the election from this seat in 2023. Meanwhile, the Telangana Congress government previously lacked a single Muslim minister, leading to accusations of underrepresentation of the Muslim community. The BJP won 8, AIMIM 7, and CPI won one. The former cricketer became an MP from Moradabad in 2009. Azharuddin won the Lok Sabha elections from Moradabad on a Congress ticket in 2009. He later contested the 2014 election from the Tonk-Sawai Madhopur seat in Rajasthan, but lost. In 2018, he was appointed the acting president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. Mohammad Azharuddin, who has played 99 Test matches for India, represented the Indian team in 99 Test matches. He was about to play his 100th Test when he was accused of match-fixing.
