A 232-year-old first-class cricket record was broken during the President’s Trophy in Karachi, Pakistan. Pakistan TV (PTV) team defended a target of 40 runs against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL). Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood’s SNGPL team could only manage 37 runs, losing a close match by 2 runs. President’s Trophy matches are being played in Pakistan from December 28, 2025. The final of the eight-team tournament will be held on February 12. A record dating back to 1794 has now been broken.
Four- and five-day red-ball matches are called first-class (FC) cricket matches. Before Saturday, no team in FC history had defended 40 runs. 232 years ago, in 1794, the Oldfields team defended 41 runs against the MCC at Lord’s. At that time, the MCC team was bowled out for just 34 runs. Ali Usman took 6 wickets for 9 runs.
Batting first in Karachi, PTV scored 166 runs. SNGPL scored 238 runs in their first innings and took a 72-run lead. After two innings, the pitch in Karachi crumbled. PTV could only manage 111 runs in their second innings, leaving SNGPL with a target of 40 runs. SNGPL, captained by Shan Masood, was all out for 37 runs. Captain Masood could not even open his account. Saifullah Bangash scored 14 runs, while no other player could even reach 10 runs. Left-arm spinner Ali Usman bowled brilliantly for PTV, taking 6 wickets for 9 runs. Fast bowler Amad Butt took 4 wickets. Most of the matches in the tournament were low-scoring.
This year’s President’s Trophy featured mostly low-scoring matches. With this win, PTV moved to second place in the points table. While SNGPL came in at the third position. PTV won the third match out of 4, while SNGPL got the second win. The final will be held on 12 February between the teams placed in the top-2 positions of the points table.
