Former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland has been hospitalized after allegedly attempting suicide. Media reports indicate the incident occurred last week. Some reports claimed that the Norwegian Editors’ Association had agreed with his lawyer not to release the matter publicly. However, some media platforms reported his critical condition. The case is linked to the ongoing investigation into his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Jagland is also charged with aggravated corruption, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. His lawyer’s firm, Elden Law Firm, confirmed to CNN that he has been charged with aggravated corruption, but he has denied all charges. The Norwegian Economic Crime Investigation Agency, Ökokrim, is investigating the case. Agency Director Poul Lønseth stated that strong grounds were found to investigate him. As part of the investigation, his home in Oslo and two other properties were searched. The agency also said it is investigating whether he received gifts, trips, loans, or other benefits during his tenure. Following the search, he has been formally designated a suspect and will now be questioned. Jagland stated that his relationship with Epstein was a wrong decision. Jagland served as Norway’s Prime Minister from 1996-1997. He also served as Foreign Minister, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (2009-2015), and Secretary General of the Council of Europe (2009-2019). Jagland stated that his relationship with Epstein was the result of a “wrong decision” or “bad judgment,” but that he did not commit any illegal acts. He stated that he would fully cooperate with the investigation and wanted the truth to be fully revealed. Jagland visited Epstein’s home several times. Documents released by the US Justice Department on January 30 revealed that Jagland and his family visited Epstein’s properties in Paris, New York, and Palm Beach several times. It also emerged that Epstein had sought his assistance in arranging meetings with high-ranking politicians, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also sought assistance in furthering his business and financial plans. The documents referred to Jagland as a “Nobel big shot.” They also stated that the two had a relationship in which Jagland’s influence and connections were instrumental, while Epstein provided him with luxury trips, gifts, and other perks. However, investigating agencies have clarified that Jagland is not connected to Epstein’s sexual crimes. The investigation is solely focused on whether he misused his position to gain any undue advantage. This investigation relates to the period when Jagland served as Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 2009 to 2015 and Secretary General of the Council of Europe from 2009 to 2019. To ensure a proper investigation, the process of revoking his diplomatic immunity has also been initiated. Who was Jeffrey Epstein? Jeffrey Epstein was a millionaire financier from New York. He was friends with prominent politicians and celebrities. In 2005, he was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl. In 2008, he was convicted of soliciting sex from a minor. He was sentenced to 13 months in prison. In 2019, Jeffrey was arrested on sex trafficking charges. But he committed suicide in jail before trial. His partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, was convicted in 2021 for aiding him. She is serving a 20-year sentence.
