Singer Arijit Singh’s father, Surinder Singh, recently revealed that after Partition, his Sikh family moved from Lahore to Jiaganj, West Bengal. He also said that Arijit used to sing kirtan in the Gurudwara as a child. In an interview with The Telegraph India, his father, Surinder Singh, recounted the family’s past. He explained that their ancestral home was near Lahore. After Partition, his father and three brothers moved to Lalgola in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. He said, “Our ancestral home was near Lahore. After Partition, my father and his three brothers moved to Lalgola.” Like many families during Partition, they had to leave everything behind and start over. They were in the textile business. Later, the family settled in Jiaganj, a small town in Murshidabad district. Surinder Singh said, “They were textile merchants and somehow managed to reach Jiaganj and built a house on the river bank.” From Lalgola, the family gradually settled in Jiaganj. Some of his relatives settled in the Punjabipara area. The Sikh community built a Gurudwara there.
Over time, Jiaganj became more than just a place to live, but a home. As a child, Arijit Singh was known as Shonu in his home and neighborhood. Even after achieving widespread recognition in 2013, his connection to the city remained. Music was a part of his life from childhood. Arijit used to go to the Gurudwara with his mother. His father recalled that he would go to the Gurudwara with his mother on special occasions and sing kirtan. Surinder Singh also expressed his feelings about his son’s success. He said, “It’s fun. I love it. People ask me what your son is doing and what his next project is.” Despite working in Mumbai, Arijit remained attached to Jiaganj. His father said, “It’s a very peaceful place. My son couldn’t live in Mumbai and came back. There’s such a pull in this land.” He remains connected to Jiaganj even today. His children are studying here. He also runs several charity projects for schools and other facilities in the city. On January 27th, Arijit Singh announced his retirement from playback singing. This news shocked his fans. The decision sparked discussion within the music industry. Meanwhile, his new song, “Raina,” has been released. The song was composed by Shekhar Ravjiani and written by Priya Saraiya.
